Whakatāne Observatory Regeneration
In this project I designed a new observatory for Whakatane on the existing observatory site. This project took inspiration from pinecones, and more particularly, the golden ratio.
The current observatory was faded and no longer catered well to its clientele. The redesign provides all necessities in one main building. The aesthetically pleasing design has a new sleek exterior, and a more functional interior which includes all necessary spaces to fit the purpose of the build.
I followed a standard spatial design process, beginning with research into the existing site and needs of the users. Taking inspiration from pinecones and the golden ration I sketched a range of ideas and then developed the concept which best fit the brief. In-depth development into floor planning, exterior and interior aesthetics and the construction of the build resulted in a strong final design which meets all brief criteria.
