Sailing
My photography’s central theme is sailing, more specifically the journey and experiences I have had with the Spirit of New Zealand by being a trainee and volunteer. I’ve aimed to capture and highlight the life changing experiences and both the physical elements of sailing that are provided with the Spirit of New Zealand. For me the Spirit of New Zealand holds a deep personal connection and significance for me. More than just a ship, it’s a teacher and a transformative space where I’ve found freedom and connection. My portfolio showcases the power of the Spirit to change lives. Each photograph has been aimed to capture authenticity in each frame with close ups and wide angle shots showing ropes, sails and interesting textures. When I first set out to create this series I knew I wanted to focus on more than just how vast the ocean is and instead zoom in onto textural aspects that make sailing special and unique. I explored how light interacts with the sails and ropes as well as shadows being cast into the water. I desaturated everything else and brought through pops of blue in the sky and water helping to showcase the beauty of the water and sky and the connection between the two.
