Identity Through Analog

DESCRIPTION:

Identity Through Analog is an experimental film exploring self-expression and identity through vintage film techniques. Growing up, I was drawn to obsolete technology, gadgets, and the intricate mechanics of bygone eras. I realised this fascination was a key part of my identity. Creating this project for the NCEA moving image external gave me the chance to explore that side of myself and dive into the visuals and techniques associated with these eras. The 70s resonated the most, so I centered the film’s style around a 70s-inspired aesthetic. This film captures self-discovery through nostalgic visuals, analogue techniques, and retro props, expressing how these eras shaped my sense of self. To build this aesthetic, I used warm colour tones, old fashion, vintage editing styles, and classic cinematic techniques, creating a visual language that embodies my passion for all things vintage. The filming process, spread throughout the year, was mainly in my school studio and at home, with a few visits to vintage locations like diners. Along the way, I created multiple cuts for assessments, refining the cinematography and solidifying the themes. I learned a lot about lighting, prop integration, and framing to cast specific shadows and achieve the look I envisioned. The most challenging—and enjoyable—part was editing to replicate a “vintage” look. I used film grain, chromatic aberration, halation, glow, and colour grading to give the footage a film-like quality. Adjusting hues to bring out 70s-style warmth was essential, combining the green screen with orange and yellow backdrops for an authentic feel.
